In 1965, the University of Kentucky had the pleasure to celebrate its centennial with exciting campus-wide celebrations and the publication of several books to immortalize the event. In the 42 years since this momentous occasion, the university has been blessed with another milestone, the centennial of its largest college, the College of Arts and Sciences.
In 1866, when the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky admitted its first students, the faculty teaching art and science subjects numbered only seven. Today the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at the University of Kentucky with 17 discipline-based departments and 14 interdisciplinary programs. The College press releases proudly note that nearly every student will take one or more classes in the college during their academic endeavor at UK. The evolution of the College of Arts and Sciences, or the College of Arts and Science as it was known in 1908, is a story worth noting in greater detail.
